Sämtliche Mitglieder waren in West-Deutschland stationierte amerikanische G.I.s. 1964 wurde die Band gegründet. Anfangs spielten sie noch unter dem Namen "The Five Torquays" als gewöhnliche Beat-Coverband. 1965, nach ihrer Entlassung aus der Armee, entwickelten sie einen sehr eigenwilligen Musik-Stil und ein verändertes Image, verbunden mit dem neuen Band-Namen. Maßgebend für den mit dem neuen Bandnamen verbundenen Imagewechsel waren Karl-H. Remy, Student der Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm, und Walther Niemann, Student der Folkwang Schule in Essen. Als Manager der "Monks" entwarfen sie für die Band ein "corporate image" und legten Grundregeln für das Auftreten der "Monks" fest: Kurze Haare mit Tonsur, schwarze Kleidung, Strick um den Hals. So wurden die "Monks" als "Anti-Beatles" gepusht.

Oscar Niemeyer, 1907 als Sohn deutschstämmiger Brasilianer in Rio de Janeiro geboren, ist so alt wie die klassische Moderne, er ist vielleicht ihr letzter lebender Vertreter, auf jeden Fall aber ihr unermüdlichster. Mit dem Schweizer Architekten Le Corbusier, den er 1936 bei dessen Südamerikareise kennenlernte, plante er das Ministerium für Bildung und Gesundheit in Rio de Janeiro. Er war zweiundfünfzig Jahre alt, ein Alter, in dem andere Architekten sich allmählich einen Ruhesitz in der Toskana zulegen, als sein bekanntestes Werk, die Großbauten der Retortenhauptstadt Brasilia, eingeweiht wurde. "The Most Beautiful Machine" is an idea of Claude E. Shannon, who died in 2001. His "Mathematical Theory of Communication" is the fundament of the digital machine. It's a communication based on the functions ON and OFF. In this special case the observers are supposed to push the ON button. After a while the lid of the trunk opens, a hand comes out and turns off the machine. The trunk closes - that's it!. (via)
So you walk over to look inside. But as soon as you get within 6 feet of the box, the hinged lid slams shut and won't open.
If you walk away from the box, it begins to feel safe again, and the lid opens an inch or so. If you leave it alone, after 5 or 10 seconds, it opens another inch or two. If you still leave it alone, it will open a bit more. Finally, it decides it's safe once again and, like a cautious anemone, it opens all the way up. But as soon as you approach it, it slams shut.
